Introduction to weathering steel
Weathering steel, namely atmospheric corrosion resistant steel, is a low-alloy steel series between ordinary steel and stainless steel. Weathering steel is made of general carbon steel with a small amount of copper, nickel and other corrosion resistant elements. It has the characteristics of high quality steel such as strength and toughness, plastic extension, molding, welding and cutting, abrasion, high temperature, fatigue resistance and so on. The weatherability is 2~8 times that of common carbon steel, ang the coatingability is 1.5~10 times that of common carbon steel, which can reduce the use of thin, bare use or simplify the use of coating.
At the same time, it has the characteristics of rust resistance, corrosion resistance, life extension, thinning, energy saving and so on. With the integration of modern metallurgy new mechanism, new technology and new process can be sustainable development and innovation, is one of the world's super steel technology frontier level of the series of steel.
Weathering resistant steel has better corrosion resistance in atmosphere than conventional carbon steel. Compared with stainless steel, weathering steel only trace alloy elements, such as phosphorus, copper, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, niobium, vanadium, titanium, alloy elements total only a few percent, and not like stainless steel, up to more than 10 percent, so the price is relatively low.
Its characteristics are: the alloy composition and weight percentage content of weathering steel are: C: 0.12 ~ 0.21, Si: 0.2 ~ 2.0, Mn: 0.7 ~ 2.0, S ≤0.036, P≤0.034, Cu: 0.10 ~ 0.40, Al <0.2, the rest is Fe and trace impurities. By alloying Cu, Mn, Si, Al, and simply adjusting the content of some elements of ordinary low carbon steel (Q235 steel), without changing the production process conditions of Q235 steel, we can produce economic weathering steel with good atmospheric corrosion resistance and comprehensive mechanical properties.
Weathering steel has the characteristics of rust resistance, corrosion resistance, thinning and consumption reduction, labor saving and energy saving, so that component manufacturers and users benefit. Mainly used in railways, vehicles, Bridges, pylons and other steel structures exposed to the atmosphere for a long time. Used for manufacturing containers, railway vehicles, oil derricks, seaport buildings, oil platforms and chemical and petroleum equipment containing hydrogen sulfide corrosive medium containers and other structural parts.
Application and examples in engineering field:
High performance weathering steel and refractory steel can reduce the maintenance cost of steel structure, and provide a new solution to solve the fire prevention and corrosion problem of exposed unprotected steel structure, such as high voltage tower. High strength weathering steel has been widely used in bridge engineering, and it is necessary to study the design theory and method. Fire-resistant weathering steel can also be used in floor bearing plates.
The National Pavilion of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the Shanghai 2010 World Expo has a rusty exterior because it is made of a special steel material called weathering steel. Weathering steel is also called Cowton steel, its special lies in, exposed to the natural environment, after the action of air, rain, steel surface will automatically form anti-corrosion protective layer, without paint protection, the life of the material in more than 80 years. Following the use of weathering steel for the exterior of the Sino-French Center at Tongji University in 2004, the Luxembourg Pavilion is used again. The finished Luxembourg Pavilion will feature a natural primary color of weathering steel, with interior walls made of fir. The new weathering steel and natural fir wood create a sculptural castle, which is not only artistic, but also aware of the contemporary concept of environmental protection and sustainability. In THE MEANTIME, THIS ALSO PORTRAYS THE Luxembourg IMAGE THAT CLOSELY RELATES WITH STEEL -- -- 100 YEARS, Luxembourg IS FAMOUS AT THE WORLD WITH EXQUISITE STEELMAKING TECHNOLOGY ALL THE TIME, IN THOSE DAYS Paris BUILDS THE STEEL THAT Eiffel Tower USES, COME FROM Luxembourg. The weathering steel used in the Luxembourg Pavilion will also be imported from Luxembourg. In addition, the weathering steel used to build the entire Luxembourg Pavilion will be 100% recycled after the pavilion is demolished. In the United States, Japan and other developed countries, weathering steel has been widely used.
The resistance of steel started late in China, but with the rapid development of national economy, the application of the resistance of steel has aroused the concern of domestic departments, so the development and upgrade of corrosion resistance of steel and steel has important practical significance, and also helps to promote the upgrading of steel industry product structure.
